Youngest F1 World Champions: The Complete List

Last updated: 3 November 2026

On 1 November 2026, Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix and became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history. He was 20 years and 68 days old.

He broke the record by a wide margin. Sebastian Vettel had held it for 16 years, since he won his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli was more than three years younger.

Below is the complete ranking of the youngest F1 world champions, followed by how the record has changed over the years.

How ages are calculated: each driver’s age on the day they mathematically clinched their first title.

The 10 Youngest F1 World Champions

1. Kimi Antonelli: 20 years, 68 days 2026, Mercedes. Clinched with third place at the Mexico City Grand Prix, with four races still to go. He is the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

2. Sebastian Vettel: 23 years, 134 days 2010, Red Bull. He won the title at the final race in Abu Dhabi, the first time all season he had led the championship. He went on to win four titles in a row.

3. Lewis Hamilton: 23 years, 300 days 2008, McLaren. He clinched it at the last corners of the last lap in Brazil, beating Felipe Massa by one point. It was the first of his seven titles.

4. Fernando Alonso: 24 years, 58 days 2005, Renault. He ended Michael Schumacher’s run of five straight titles and became the youngest champion at the time.

5. Max Verstappen: 24 years, 73 days 2021, Red Bull. He decided the title on the final lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi, against Hamilton. It was the first of four in a row.

6. Emerson Fittipaldi: 25 years, 273 days 1972, Lotus. He held the youngest-champion record for 33 years, until Alonso broke it.

7. Michael Schumacher: 25 years, 314 days 1994, Benetton. He won the title by one point after a collision with Damon Hill in the Adelaide finale. It was the first of his seven titles.

8. Lando Norris: 26 years, 24 days 2025, McLaren. He clinched it at the Abu Dhabi finale, holding off teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen.

9. Niki Lauda: 26 years, 197 days 1975, Ferrari. He clinched it at Monza, ending Ferrari’s 11-year wait for a drivers’ title.

10. Jacques Villeneuve: 26 years, 200 days 1997, Williams. He beat Schumacher in the Jerez finale, the race where Schumacher was disqualified from the championship for colliding with him.

How Big Is Antonelli’s Margin?

Antonelli beat Vettel’s record by 3 years and 66 days.

That’s unusual. Before 2026, the record had only ever been broken by small amounts:

  • Alonso beat Fittipaldi’s age by about 1.5 years (2005)
  • Hamilton beat Alonso by less than a year (2008)
  • Vettel beat Hamilton by just 166 days (2010)

Antonelli’s jump is bigger than all three of those put together. That’s mainly because of how early he reached F1. He made his debut in 2025 at 18, skipping several junior categories along the way, and in only his second season he won a title most champions win in their mid-twenties or later.

How the Record Has Changed

The record for the youngest world champion has passed through ten drivers since the championship began in 1950:

  1. Nino Farina (1950): 43
  2. Juan Manuel Fangio (1951): 40
  3. Alberto Ascari (1952): 34
  4. Mike Hawthorn (1958): 29
  5. Jim Clark (1963): 27
  6. Emerson Fittipaldi (1972): 25
  7. Fernando Alonso (2005): 24
  8. Lewis Hamilton (2008): 23
  9. Sebastian Vettel (2010): 23
  10. Kimi Antonelli (2026): 20

In 76 years, the age of the youngest champion has fallen from 43 to 20. The biggest drops came early, as the sport moved away from the older drivers of the 1950s, and again in the 2000s and 2020s, when drivers started arriving in F1 younger.

How Antonelli Won It

Antonelli’s title wasn’t just about youth. After a rookie season in 2025, when George Russell outqualified him by an average of three tenths, he led the 2026 championship for most of the year. His tally included 9 wins and a run of five in a row early in the season, and he recovered from 19th on the grid to win at Monza.

Our Antonelli vs Russell data analysis shows where he made the difference: the two Mercedes drivers were almost level in qualifying, but Antonelli won the race head-to-head comfortably. See the final points table on our Championship Standings page.

Could Anyone Beat Antonelli’s Record?

It will be very hard. To beat 20 years and 68 days, a driver would need to reach F1 at about 18 and win the title within two seasons.

The only realistic candidate on the current grid is Arvid Lindblad, the 2026 rookie, born in August 2007. To beat the record, he would have to win the title before mid-October 2027, in only his second season, driving for Racing Bulls. That’s very unlikely, so Antonelli’s record could stand for a long time.
